Diamonds

Diamonds are the hardest of all gemstones. They measure a 10 on the Moh's scale of hardness. There are four important factors to consider when buying a diamond: Cut, Carat, Clarity and Color. The Goldworks is able to supply any cut, carat, quality and color of diamond you can imagine. If you wish to learn more about Diamonds, please read the information below.

Diamond Shapes

Diamond Cut

A Diamond's cut will greatly affect the amount of brilliance the stone has. A cut defines the symmetry and proportions of a stone. When the cuts are too shallow or too deep the stone will not flash light and brilliance as well as an Excellent or Good cut stone. There are several different grades for Cut:

Excellent Cut

These stones are cut to ideal proportions displaying absolute brilliance and beauty. This is the highest quality and more expensive cut.

Very Good/Good Cut

Good Cut stones are just outside of the excellent cut range.

Fair Cut

This grade will display significantly less brilliance and sometimes retains excess Carat weight that is not proportionate to the stone.

Poor Cut

These irregular cuts display an even more significant reduction of brilliance and considerable amounts of Carat weight that is not proportionate to the stone.

Diamond Color

The natural color of a white Diamond can vary from completely colorless to a strong yellow. The color scale is used to grade the color of a Diamond. A Diamond of "D" color will have a higher value than one of "K" color. Diamonds that are colorless or near colorless will allow more light to pass through the stone which results in more sparkle and brilliance. Diamonds with color grades "G" through "I" still offer nice color for a lower cost.

Diamond Clarity

A Diamond's clarity refers to inclusions and blemishes within the stone. Flaws are a very common occurence in all gemstones and if a Diamond is selected carefully it should not be a major concern. Inclusions are internal flaws in the Diamond and blemishes are flaws on the surface of the stone. Inclusions can be air bubbles, other minerals and cracks within the stone while blemishes are any sort of scratches, pits or chips on the Diamond. A diamond with few inclusions will cost a lot more than one with many inclusions. A diamond with an SI quality will still display nicely to the naked eye without costing as much as a VS quality diamond.

Clarity Scale

Diamond Carat

Carat is a unit of measurement for gemstones. One Carat is equal to 0.20 Grams. The larger the diamond, the higher It's Carat weight. A Diamond's price per Carat will be higher as the stones get larger. This is because it is much more rare to find a large piece of quality Diamond rough compared to smaller pieces. Keep in mind that a Diamond with deep Cut will have a higher Carat weight compared to a more shallow Cut diamond.
